Safe Streets for our Kids

As a young boy growing up in Beaverbrook and walking to school, first at W. Erskine Johnston and, later on at Earl of March, dealing with speeding traffic and dangerous drivers was something my family worked hard to make sure I was prepared for. It’s something that I think about now with my own daughter, Sophia, who will be starting school a year from now.

Just recently, the Ottawa Citizen published a story about the ongoing lack of funding for  crossing guard programs near schools throughout the City. I was disappointed to see that of the 15 crossing guard locations that have still not been funded, three of them are in Kanata North, more than any other ward in the City!

This is unacceptable. In Kanata North, we need a Councillor who is going to stand up for our community and our interests, especially when it comes to something as important as keeping our kids safe. I will make the funding of these three crossing guards a top priority at the Council table.

More than just addressing the funding shortfall though, I will work with the Ottawa Police Service to ensure that we are rigorously enforcing traffic laws in school zones. There is a pilot commencing in 2019 that is looking at using photo radar to catch those who drive recklessly through our school zones and put our kids at risk. As Councillor, I will work to ensure that Kanata North is included in this approach at the earliest opportunity. Repeat offenders who disregard our children’s safety need to be identified and pursued to the fullest extent of the law.

Our kids deserve better. This is not the time to sit back and hope for change or improvement next year. We need to come together now, as a community, make sure our voice is heard at Council and that our children receive the care and protection they deserve.

Thank you for taking the time to join me in this effort, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly with your thoughts, concerns or to share some of your experiences regarding traffic safety around our schools.
